Podere Consani details

The view from Podere Consani looks like something you’d find on a postcard racked up outside a Lucca souvenir shop. That’s because these farmhouse cottages are on a sunny plateau looking out over Tuscany’s rolling hills and pencil-thin Cypress trees.

There are two separate cottages – La Capanna and Casa di Cherubino – and they share the gardens of the main house, where the owners Lelio and Susan live. Simply travellers stay in La Capanna, although if you’re travelling in a big group, Casa di Cherubino is available, too. Both cottages are built in stone and have terracotta tiled floors, whitewashed walls and beams. La Capanna is split over two levels. Upstairs, you’ll find the lounge, kitchen and dining areas and they all open onto a pool terrace. Downstairs, the converted barn has two double bedrooms with French doors that open onto a private garden. Each bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, as well.

Outside, the landscaped gardens are dotted with lavender bushes, lemon trees and beds of sweet basil. The English-speaking owners make their own wine and olive oil, and Susan is on hand to give you tips on the area and local restaurants. If you want to explore, Lucca is about a 20-minute drive away and Florence and Pisa can be reached in about an hour. Plus, Viareggio’s beaches are a 30-minute trip by car.
