Tucked in well-tended gardens, this villa has a real away-from-it-all feel. But it’s not too far from the centre of things. There’s a sandy beach and a good mix of shops, bars and restaurants just a fifteen minute walk away.

Style-wise, the Villa Isabel is traditional Portuguese – in fact, its whitewashed façade and bright bougainvillea gardens give the impression of a smart family home. Outside, a classic rectangular pool takes centre-stage. Plus, there’s a built-in barbecue and a table and chairs overlooking the pool, so dining al fresco is easy.

Step inside, meanwhile, and a fresh interior greets you. On the décor front, nothing’s out of the ordinary, but you’ll find things clean, comfortable, and homely. Think white walls, tiled floors and over-sized patterned rugs. The open-plan living-come-dining room deserves special mention. With big leather sofas, brightly coloured cushions and a TV and DVD player, it makes a great social space. There’s a large well-equipped kitchen downstairs, too, complete with a dishwasher and microwave.

The four bedrooms are equally as inviting. Furniture comes in the form of carved wooden beds and bedside tables. And for an added touch of luxury, head through the master bedroom and you’ll find a rooftop terrace – it’s perfect sunbathing territory and the views are something else.
