With its hillside setting, Villa Mancanna is certainly secluded. In fact, peace and quiet is a given, despite the fact it’s only a ten-minute drive to the pretty hilltop village of Castelmola and 15 minutes to the town of Taormina. It makes it the ideal countryside villa if you’re looking for independence, without being completely isolated.

The villa itself is traditionally Sicilian, built in limestone and with a sympathetic extension that separates the bedrooms from the living and dining areas. Satellite TV provides the home-from-home feel, but for the pièce de résistance you need to head outside. Here, you’ll get fantastic sea views from the terrace, which also has a barbecue so you can dine al fresco. There isn’t a pool, but you can drive for ten-minutes to the villa’s sister property, Hotel Villa Sonia, where you can use the pool for €5 a day.

Speaking of getting out and about, the caved Sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca is about 15 minutes away and definitely worth going to see, especially if you’re there on the third Sunday of September. This is when a religious procession takes a statue from the sanctuary down to the town, where a grand banquet is then laid on. In Castelmola, meanwhile, you’ll find plenty restaurants, bars and pizzerias. Don't miss the breathtaking view from Bar San Giorgio in the square.
