Right on the beach and home to a spectacular coral reef, the Ellaidhoo makes the most of its private island setting.

If snorkelling and scuba diving are high on your holiday to-do list, this place won’t fail to impress. It’s just footsteps away from the clear waters of the Indian Ocean, and comes complete with its own house reef. What’s more, there’s a PADI-approved diving school on-site, so getting started couldn’t be easier.

Away from the beach, you’ll find a good-sized swimming pool. Surrounded by a terrace and backed by huge gardens, it's in a really peaceful spot. There’s a snack bar, too, serving up drinks and light meals throughout the day.

For more in the way of food, head to the hotel’s buffet restaurant. It serves up dishes from all over the world, and has show-cooking stations so you can get things like omelettes and pasta cooked to order. Eat out on the wooden veranda and you can enjoy fantastic ocean views while you eat. There’s a seafood barbecue held here every week, too.

As for the hotel’s rooms, they range from the understatedly stylish to the all-out lavish. Rooms are decked out in bold colours, and come with all the essentials like air-conditioning and satellite TVs. It’s the water bungalows that are really impressive, though. As well as luxurious interiors and uninterrupted ocean views, they even share their own à la carte seafood restaurant.
