A quiet setting, pretty gardens and a great location on the edge of Sorrento – this family-run hotel has plenty of plus points.

If you want a simple base for exploring the Neapolitan Riviera, the Florida Hotel has a lot going for it. Tucked down a quiet road, it’s a short walk from Sorrento’s shops, restaurants and piazzas. What’s more, you’re just 15 minutes by foot from Sant Agnello station, which offers trains to Pompeii. Local buses also stop nearby to run you up and down the coast.

As for the hotel itself, it’s family-run with a homely atmosphere. The bedrooms are split between the main building and an annexe in the garden. And each one is neatly kitted out with Italian furniture and air-conditioning.

The garden is the best bit, though. There’s a charming sun terrace between the two buildings, with a pool framed by loungers, palms and flowerbeds. Lawns shaded by lemon and orange trees offer up the perfect retreat from the midday sun. And setting the seal on the scene is a bar serving drinks and lunchtime snacks. You’ve got the option of the sea nearby, too. There’s a small pebble beach and sunbathing platforms a few minutes down the road.

Lastly, a word on dining. Mornings start with buffet breakfasts, and the restaurant by the pool is open for lunches and dinners. There are also occasional gala dinner nights around the pool, so you can eat under the stars. And don't miss pizza nights in the citrus grove.
