With nearly 150 years’ worth of history to its name, the Hotel Plaza e de Russie exudes old-world charm and sophistication. From the outside, ivory-coloured walls boast wrought-iron balconies and Victorian style lamps, while an arched doorway gives way to a ballroom-sized lobby. In here, it’s all high ceilings, glimmering chandeliers and sink-into-me armchairs.

The hotel’s 51 bedrooms continue in the same vein. Dark wooden furniture and detailed soft furnishings give them a regal feel, while bathrooms give a nod to days gone by with walls covered in a local stone called travertine. Air-conditioning, satellite TVs and Wi-Fi, meanwhile, bring things into the 21st century.

On the food front, evening meals are made up of four traditional courses with fish and Mediterranean cuisine a central part of the menu. Breakfast, meanwhile, is a complimentary buffet of hot dishes, cereals, fresh fruit and pastries. And the best thing is, you can eat up on the rooftop terrace – the views of the sea from up here are nothing short of sensational.

In terms of location, meanwhile, you’ve got plenty to dip into on your doorstep. A bustling and lively promenade sits in front of the hotel. There’s a beach just across the road, where you’ll find shops and restaurants. Plus Viareggo’s pretty town centre is less than a 10-minute walk away.
