This hotel may be a 3 star, but it’s landed itself a 5 star location. An attractive block of honey-coloured stone, it stands on the seafront at Xlendi, gazing straight down its tiny, narrow bay - an excellent base to take advantage of the superb diving in Gozo.

Setting aside, the hotel is a cosy and simple affair. The ground floor is given over to its ‘Zafiro’ restaurant-come-bar. All ironwork bistro chairs and marbled pillars, it’s a nice setting for the English and Continental buffet breakfasts. Snack and à la carte menus are served here at lunch and dinner, too, with catch-of-the-day fish dishes the favourite. Alternatively, take a table outside to watch the boats while you eat. And come back at dusk for pre-dinner drinks. Because Xlendi faces west, the sunset views here are fantastic.

Although the rooms are on the smallish side, they’re nicely decorated and come with internet access and air-conditioning.

In terms of the wider location, you’ll find plenty of shops, bars and restaurants near the hotel. When you want to take in other towns, local buses run to Victoria where you can catch other services that fan out around the island.
