With a rooftop garden overlooking the Nile, it’s no wonder this budget-friendly hotel comes so highly recommended.

The Hotel St Joseph is a prize-winning property – it scooped a 2012 Traveller's Choice award from TripAdvisor. This is partly down to its location. It's right by the banks of the river Nile and there are bars and restaurants a minute's walk from the front doors. Famous sights are in easy reach, too, as Luxor and Karnak Temples are 10 minutes away in a taxi.

As Nile views go, the hotel offers some of the best in town. Up on the roof is a terrace where views sweep over the water to the Valley of the Queens on the West Bank. There's a small outdoor pool up here, along with a bar and a café that serves light bites like omelettes.

In the evenings, head down to the basement to find a pub with nightly happy hours. And when it comes to bedtime, you'll find your room basic but comfortable, with cool tiled floors and simple wooden furniture.
