If there was an award for best location, Pink Shell would definitely be a contender. It’s got a prime spot on Fort Myers’ seafront and, as such, comes with a stretch of sand that wouldn’t look out of place in the Caribbean.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this hotel. It also comes with its own butterfly garden, a 200-foot fishing pier and a mini marina. And that’s on top of three heated swimming pools.

On the subject of pools, the Octopool is a real talking point. More of an under-the-sea experience than a swimming pool, it’s accessorised with a super-sized waterfall, giant shells, sea sponges and underwater speakers. Loungers and candy-striped umbrellas complete the picture.

If you’re in need of a little pampering, meanwhile, a visit to the hotel’s Aquagene Spa is a must. Typically American, it’s over-sized, state-of-the-art and styled to the nines. This means a mermaid-esque colour scheme of greens and blues, and throne-like spa chairs. It’s perfect mani-and-pedi territory.

Elsewhere, on the looks front, the hotel is all about modern beach chic. The lobby is wood-clad and whitewashed with sea and sand-coloured décor. Bizarrely, the centre-piece is a massive storybook tree that appears to grow through the ceiling.

The bedrooms, meanwhile, range from hotel suites to two bedroom apartments. Each one has its own style, too. Some work the nautical blue and white look. Others combine British racing green with navy and cream. And they all come with well-equipped kitchenettes and screen-covered balconies.
