The Riu Palace Jamaica is set among the palms, which sweep down to a white-sand beach. The hotel isn’t off the beaten track, though – the shops, restaurants and nightlife of Montego Bay are less than a 10-minute drive away.

The hotel is adults-only, so the grounds are really peaceful. Seek out the swimming pool for the best relaxation spots – it’s massive, and weaves through a sunny terrace freckled with tropical shrubs, sunbeds and thatched umbrellas.
