This place is built on the site of a 16th-century Portuguese fortress – hence the name. And we’re guessing it’s just as impressive today as it was back then. Set in acres of well-manicured gardens that sweep down to the ocean, it’s easy to see why this resort earned itself a 5-star status.

You’ll find a choice of rooms available in the main building plus some spacious villas and cottages nestled among the greenery. Whichever you go for, expect contemporary spaces with an emphasis on comfort. We’re talking over-sized beds dressed in crisp white cotton and dark-wood furniture. Air-conditioning comes as standard and in-room comforts like well-stocked minibars and TVs add the finishing touches. Plus, stand alone cottages and villas come with private verandas and postcard-worthy sea views.

Accommodation aside, a real talking point here is the spa. This state-of-the-art sanctuary blends ancient Indian wisdom with contemporary therapies. And with treatment rooms that echo Eastern temples on the design front, the surroundings are positively Zen-like.

When it comes to dining, for sheer elegance head to Morisco. This contemporary seafood restaurant even comes with a Martini bar attached. Or for a spot of rustic chic, head to cosy Il Camino and order a pizza straight from the oven. There’s fine Indian cuisine on the menu, too, of course, and big buffets with an international flavour.

One last thing - as a guest at the Vivanta by Taj-Fort Aguada, you’re also welcome to use any of the facilities at the neighbouring Vivanta Taj-Holiday Village, too. And you know when somewhere markets itself as a village, rather than a hotel, you’re going to be spoilt for choice.
