A recent 27-million-dollar makeover has put this stylish hotel up there with Florida’s best. The star of the show is the swimming pool, a clover-shaped number that’s the largest on Clearwater Beach. Surrounded by slender palms and just footsteps from the sea, it’s in a really tranquil spot. When all you want to do is take it easy, order a cocktail from the bar and sink into one of the sundeck’s plush loungers.

The bedrooms and suites have also had a major facelift. Sporting lemon-coloured walls and leaf-patterned soft furnishings, they’ve got a real holiday feel to them. Both come with all the trimmings, too, like 32-inch flatscreen TVs, Wi-Fi and private balconies. And if you opt for a suite, you’ll get a bigger place with sofas, a dining room table and a kitchenette.

If you’d rather someone else did the cooking though, head to the hotel’s restaurant. It specialises in fish and seafood, but there are plenty of other dishes on the menu like pizza and steak. For breakfast you can help yourself to omelettes and pancakes at the buffet. Décor-wise, the place is really funky, with sunshine-yellow walls and brightly patterned booths.

Last but not least, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy here. Test drive the machines in the state-of-the-art fitness centre or head down to the beach for a spot of parasailing or scuba diving. Elsewhere, you’ll find a games room and a beauty salon. Come evening, head to the Iguana Bar for live music and dancing. Take a stroll out to the deck and you might even spot the dolphins which call the waters here home.
