In Florida, location is everything. And when it comes to sensational settings, this one takes some beating. Pelican Pointe sits in South Gulfview Broadway, just metres from Clearwater's famous beach. As such, white sands and turquoise waters are at your fingertips. And the white-knuckle thrills of Tampa's Busch Gardens theme park are about a 40-minute drive away.

As for the resort itself, it's made up of what the American's call condos - only to us, they're apartments. Each one is simply-styled with an open-plan kitchenette and lounge, a bedroom, and a refreshingly spacious bathroom. There's a balcony that runs the length of the building, too, with tables and chairs set outside every condo.

As for extras, there's a small fitness centre and the lobby leads a double life as a breakfast room, where the day starts simply with coffee and over-sized American muffins. But the best thing about this place is the pool which, although fairly dinky, comes with a roomy sun terrace and views over the Gulf of Mexico.
