In its heyday back in the Thirties, the Saratoga was a favourite with writers, artists and musicians. They’d gather at the hotel to have dinner and watch the Anacaona, a popular Cuban orchestral, performance. These days, the scene is a little different – the whole place has recently been given a 21st-century makeover. That said, touches of days gone by can still be seen. The eclectic neo-classical exterior has been beautifully restored, and high ceilings and old-fashioned baths give the rooms a traditional feel.

Everything else is bang up-to-date, though. The rooftop pool, for instance, wouldn’t look out of place in a luxurious Manhattan pad. It’s surrounded by a sun terrace and offers up some of the best views in the city – you can look out over modern Havana, the old town and the ocean. Plus there’s a restaurant here that’s ideal for al fresco lunches and dinners. Choose from simple dishes like pizzas and sandwiches, or go for something different and try the fusion cuisine.

Inside, meanwhile, you’ll find another eatery. With its mosaic tables, handmade wall tiles and elegant chairs, it treads the line between colonial and contemporary. In terms of food, you can treat your tastebuds to dishes from all over the world, like pasta, meat and fish, as well as local specialities.

Finally, when you want to see a bit of the city you’re in a great spot. The hotel is on the corner of the lively Paseo del Prado street, so there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants on your doorstep. Plus Havana’s big names, like the Fraternity Park and Partagas Cigar Factory, are within walking distance.
