Run by a friendly family, the Pacifae Golden Village is tucked away in a quiet corner of Katelios, a village on Kefalonia’s south-east edge. Agia Barbara Beach is a 15-minute walk away, and its sands are backed by some excellent fish restaurants. The village centre, with its handful of tavernas and bars, can also be reached in 15 minutes.

The hotel’s set in large gardens, so it’s nice and peaceful. Outside, there’s a 33-metre-long pool backdropped by mountains, a sun terrace with smart loungers and thatched parasols, and a pool bar serving drinks and cocktails.

Breakfast is a buffet affair, with Continental treats like ham, cheeses, fruit, Greek yoghurt, and omelette, while at dinnertime the restaurant focuses on fresh seafood and traditional home cooking.

Bedrooms are airy and modern, with cream-coloured walls offsetting dark-wood furniture. Each one comes with extras like air-con and a flatscreen TV, plus they all have a balcony or terrace with views of the pool or sea.
