From a natural terrace fringed by pines and cork oaks, A Senhora da Montanha looks out over the wooded foothills of the Serra de Monchique towards the sea. It’s a lovely setting. Not so low that you lose the view, and not so high that you’re up in the clouds. And it means you’ll enjoy refreshing breezes in the summer when the coast below is sweltering.

Inside, split levels and marble floors add a feel of extra spaciousness. The airy living and dining room is open-plan, with a terracotta-coloured sofa and armchair teamed with comfortable, cushioned wicker seating.

Outside, a long, elegant, covered verandah stretches right along the front of the villa. Smartly tiled, it’s well furnished with dark wicker patio tables and chairs. And across from the verandah is a generous-sized swimming pool next to a huge sun terrace and lawn.

There’s no shortage of restaurants a short drive away, but staying put is an attractive option. Two big fridge-freezers in the well-equipped kitchen mean you can stock up in Monchique, under four kilometres away, and laze your time away with barbecues by the pool. But if you feel like exploring, there’s plenty to do – beach trips, hikes up to Picota peak or down to Caldas, and excursions to lovely Silves are just the tip of the iceberg.
