Nestled into the hillside, The Stone House has been carefully converted into an upside-down layout. It might seem odd, but the idea’s to really make the most of the view down the hill. As such, the double bedroom is on the ground floor, with the single bedroom and spacious sitting room on the first. Décor-wise, the sitting room’s comfy sofa and armchairs, in cool green, contrast with pale walls and dark wood furniture. And there’s also a dining table and chairs.

The best place to enjoy The Stone House’s vantage point is from the secluded terrace. Shaded by a huge old olive tree, it’s reached up some steps beneath a pretty arch of vine boughs. From there, you can see the spa town of Caldas tucked in a cleft of the hillside. What’s more, you can trace the woods all the way to the sea.

Across the terrace, the old stone cistern – that used to collect water from the wooded hillside above – has been extended to make a small swimming pool. And in terms of location, a footpath threads its way from the terrace, up through cork oaks and olive trees to a tiny hamlet. It’s just one of many lovely strolls. Plus, there are plenty of good restaurants within a short drive.
