Villa Golfinhos sits almost completely alone in a valley on a wooded hillside, just below Monchique. It really makes the most of the peace and quiet, not to mention the fantastic views over the valley and distant sea.

But though there’s a sense of being away from it all, the sweeping Algarve beaches can be reached in about half an hour. Restaurants, meanwhile, are just a short drive away.

Mind you, if you want to avoid the crowds, there’s your own pool to cool off in, complete with a pretty sun-trap of a terrace. Speaking of the terrace, it’s here you’ll find a table, chairs and barbecue – perfect for not only the odd al fresco meal, but also enjoying the panoramic views.

Not surprisingly, the interior of the villa has been designed with those views in mind. The big spacious living/dining room is lovely – contemporary but with distinct Portuguese flair. It’s got comfy sofas, high-backed wicker armchairs and extra wide French windows opening out onto the terrace. There’s even a cosy fireplace for the cooler months.

The kitchen, meanwhile, is well-equipped, plus there’s a handy little laundry room with a washing machine, accessed from outside the villa.
