Storybook looks. Peace and quiet. To-die-for sea views. The Riu Palace Madeira lives up to its regal title.

Terraced into a hillside above Canico waterfront, this hotel is all slender turrets, glassed archways and wedding-cake stairways.

Looks aside, it’s in a fantastic spot. The hotel is slightly elevated so it looks straight over the ocean. What’s more, it’s a couple of kilometres away from Canico proper - perfect if you’ve set your mind on some peace and quiet. There’s also a small pebble beach just across the promenade.

Not surprisingly, the two pools are positioned to spotlight the views. Side by side, they’re framed by terraces. For more by way of relaxation, there’s a spa and fitness centre, too. You can call by for a sauna or workout, or head for the indoor pool. This blue-tiled haven has giant arched windows so you can swim while soaking up the ocean vistas.

Inside, the lobby has an air of regal Victoriana. It’s a whirl of wood-pedestalled pillars, velvet red banquettes and parlour palms. The same theme is evident in the rooms. They’re elegant, with dark-wood furnishings and rich blues and yellows dominating.

Food-wise, there’s more of the same flair. Crisp white linen and Louis XV-style chairs are used to good effect in the main restaurant. Overlooking the sea meanwhile, you’ve got a pretty lounge terrace set with stripey-cushioned chairs and dinky tables - just the place to survey the views over a cocktail or pot of tea.
