If you were designing the perfect holiday villa, chances are you’d come up with something like Monte Adriao. Outside, its spacious lawns frame a good-sized pool sunk into a tiled terrace. And it’s perfectly placed to take in wide open views of the coast.

Inside, it’s as classically elegant. The rooms are spacious and airy, smartly furnished but comfortable, with tiled or wooden floors. Two of the three bedrooms have en suites, and there’s also a third bathroom. Another plus is that the living area and master bedroom each have their own covered verandah. As for the kitchen, it’s brimming with mod cons. There’s even a dishwasher, so chores are kept to a minimum.

There’s a definite ‘miles from anywhere’ feel about this pocket of Portugal, and the villa itself is no different. But it’s by no means isolated. Boliqueime, with its authentic bars and restaurants, is just a short drive away with tiny shops, white-washed houses and a cobbled square. The beach isn’t too far away either. A fifteen minute drive takes you to the five kilometre stretch of golden sands at Praia de Falesia.
