Combining a village-like atmosphere with a beachfront setting, Ocean Blue & Sand is spot on for a little downtime.

Ocean Blue & Sand – the name says it all. You’ll find this place right next door to Bavaro beach, putting the white sands and turquoise waters within a few minutes’ stroll from the lobby. And as you’d expect, the hotel’s private stretch of shoreline comes with all the usual trimmings – neat rows of cabana-shaded sunbeds and the full A to Z of watersports. Not to mention nice-to-have extras like a PADI dive shop.

As for the hotel itself, it’s more like a village than a beach resort. Think palm-height villas, with candy-coloured walls and terracotta roofs, curved around two massive pools. On the things-to-do front, there’s a ten-pin bowling alley, a sports centre and even a climbing wall. Factor in ten bars and a clutch of themed restaurants that line up along the edge of a fountain-filled pond and there’s no need for you to set foot outside the complex.

On the subject of restaurants, there are ten to choose from, most of which are part of the hotel’s All Inclusive package. Take your pick from Italian, Mexican and Caribbean to name a few. There’s even a Starbucks-style coffee shop where muffins and milkshakes sit side-by-side with a classy coffee menu. If you want to splash out, you can pay a little extra to tuck into succulent seafood at ‘Bucareno’ or chef’s specials at ‘El Bodegon’ steak house.

The bedrooms are junior suites with open-plan living areas. They’re simply decorated with pale walls and marble floors, but it’s the furniture that adds a touch of style to the scene. It’s got a colonial feel to it with plenty of wicker and dark wood. Meanwhile, modern touches like satellite TVs and air-conditioning bring things up-to-date.
