Winner of the Condé Nast Johansens Most Excellent Value Hotel award and one of the Great Hotels of the World, this place certainly goes all out to impress. Its location gives it an air of exclusivity, too – it’s set on a small hill above Mykonos Town. And although it’s in a nice and quiet spot, it’s still only a 15-minute walk from the capital.

The hotel itself is a lesson in modern, pared-down elegance. From the outside, it looks less like a hotel and more like a cluster of whitewashed villas. Each comes embellished with a dark-wood balcony and French doors.

Inside, there are just 26 rooms which have been individually designed. It’s as if each one has been a labour of love for the stylist. Soft furnishings come in all sorts of colours, from beaded cream cushions to duck egg-blue drapes. The extras, too, have been well thought out. There are telephones you can answer even if you’re in the bath, as well as satellite TVs, CD and DVD players, and fluffy bathrobes and slippers.

But the ultimate in luxury has to be the spa. The detail stretches from the surroundings - like the tea-lights and seashells that mark the entrance to the Turkish bath – to the therapies themselves. Here, treatments like facials and body wraps are adapted to suit you.

Outside, the swimming pool makes the most of its vantage point. It’s set in a sun deck with views down to the famous Mykonos windmills and the harbour below. Teak deckchairs and sunbeds complete the scene. The restaurant is on a terrace out here, too. Expect a modern Greek experience with recipes packed with organic and locally-sourced ingredients.
