Hotel Calabona offers a newly-refurbished restaurant, large pool and private cove.

Hotel Calabona is tucked away in a quiet bay, just across the road from a private sandy cove. The clear waters here make it perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving. Alghero’s old walled town, where you’ll find the Gothic Santa Maria Cathedral, is close by. And the nature reserve of Capo Caccia, home to the famous Neptune’s Grotto, takes around 30 minutes to reach by car.

At the front of the hotel, there’s a large pool that’s framed by hedges for privacy. Nearby, there’s a grassy lawn with panoramic sea views, and a spacious bar area that serves a light brunch on the pool terrace.

The main restaurant was refurbished in 2012. It’s indoors, but has a garden theme, with trellises, benches and stripy tablecloths. The menu makes the most of the local seafood, with dishes like grilled king prawns, and spaghetti with sea urchin. Occasionally, the hotel hosts breakfasts and Sardinian-themed evenings in a marquee overlooking the coast.

Bedrooms differ in terms of décor. Some are traditional, with sturdy dark wood furniture and patterned soft furnishings. Others are more modern, decorated in white with pale wooden floors and furniture. Superior rooms, with flatscreen TVs and sea views, are also available.
