Villagio Verde – the name says it all. Translated it means Green Village and that’s exactly what to expect here. Hidden among fruit groves on the outskirts of town, this family-run complex is made up of a main stone-and-terracotta hotel and a sprinkling of rustic bungalows.

The main building offers up simply-styled rooms dressed in cool white and aqua. The bungalows and studios, meanwhile, look a bit like gingerbread log cabins. They’re dinky but cosy and come kitted out with basic kitchenettes.

In keeping with the traditional look and feel of the place, the stone-flagged sun terrace is framed by bright blooms and citrus trees. In the middle, underneath a vine-entwined trellis, there’s a small swimming pool surrounded by a handful of cushioned, wooden sun loungers. And completing the ambience is the sweet smell of jasmine.

Tucked just behind here is the restaurant. Its al fresco terrace is shaded by a wicker roof that lets the sunlight dapple through. And as for the food, TripAdvisor reviewers rave about it – especially the a la carte menu. It’s really good value for money and, because this place is run by a family, you get a real taste of mamma’s home cooking, which is available on request.

When you want to venture out, the centre of Sorrento is just ten minutes away on foot.
