Set on a cliff in Sant Agnello, a quiet suburb of Sorrento, Hotel Mediterraneo puts you right in the heart of local life. On the doorstep you’ll find tiny trattorias and neighbourhood shops, while the main square, Piazza Sant Agnello, is just a 10-minute walk away.

Sorrento’s jumble of narrow streets isn’t far either – it’s an easy 25-minute walk. The hotel provides a free shuttle bus service to and from Piazza Tasso, the town’s main square, too.

The Mediterraneo is a tall, whitewashed building, looking out over the Bay of Naples. Rooms are simply decorated, with whitewashed walls, French windows and Sorrentine floor tiles. On the top floor, the Vesuvio restaurant boasts spectacular views over the bay, with the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius looming in the distance. The menu is Mediterranean-inspired, with Sorrentine and Neapolitan dishes topping the bill at dinner.

Outside, there’s a freshwater pool, framed by tall palms and fragrant orange trees. There’s a poolside bar for lunch, with pizzas served from a traditional wood-burning oven. After dark, the space is lit by Moroccan-style lanterns and offers tableside cooking and an impressive wine list.

During summer, a lift from the lobby takes you down the craggy cliff to La Marinella, a small black-sand beach with a sunbathing platform.
