Quinta da Casa Branca details
A plush five-star retreat, Quinta da Casa Branca combines to-die-for décor with gardens that were made for romance.
Set in sub-tropical gardens, the Quinta da Casa Branca is the place to get back to nature. The grounds are nothing short of spectacular. In fact, with so many exotic flowers and trees like Pink Snowballs and African Tulip Trees, the hotel has name-tagged them in response to guest demand. And with around three Zen-like acres, they make superb strolling territory.
As gorgeous as they are, it’s not the gardens that make the headlines here. The main attraction is the building itself. A long, contemporary glass building more reminiscent of an art gallery than a hotel, it was critically acclaimed for its modern design when it was unveiled. In fact, it was awarded the ‘City of Funchal Architecture Prize’ in 1999. On top of that, the property is a member of ‘The Small Luxury Hotels of the World’, so you know you’re in for something special.
You can see why it’s held in such high esteem the minute you step inside. The lobby’s polished wood floors and trendy white sofas give it an exclusive but laid-back feel. But it’s the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that really steal the show.
Design-wise, the rest of the place follows suit. There are several areas where you can relax with a drink, including a terrace and cocktail bar. The library lounge deserves special mention for its chic style. Ditto the bedrooms. Painted in warm, modern tones, they don’t scrimp on the space and come with extras like minibars and personalised bathrobes. And because they’re all on the ground floor, terraces have direct access to the gardens.
The food matches the hotel’s five-star status. For sheer elegance, it has to be the classy Casa da Quinta à la carte where contemporary Portuguese cuisine is the order of the day. Set in the middle of the breathtaking gardens, go for the Garden Pavilion restaurant serving breakfast and lunch.
With all this, plus a swimming pool, a fitness centre and a spa, it’s no wonder this peaceful oasis comes so highly recommended.
