This chic hotel enjoys one of Funchal’s most coveted locations - just steps away from the old town waterfront.

It’s as if this place was made to be beside the ocean. With its fresh looks and pillar-fronted terrace, it’s got a Riviera feel that’s totally at one with its surroundings. And its setting is a rare commodity here. It’s one of the few hotels right on the promenade of Funchal old town, so you’ve got lots of traditional restaurants on one side and Atlantic views on the other.

The hotel makes a point of celebrating its shoreline spot. Take the foyer. Along with its peaches-and-cream colour palette and glossy marble floor, it’s accessorised with maritime objet d’arts. And the pool has taken the obvious place right by the promenade. It’s designed in lagoon style and set in to a terrace with views over the passing cruise ships.

The nautical theme is evident in the Captain’s Bar, too. This upstairs lounge is all bowed beams, tongue-and-groove walls and dark-wood tables. An outdoor terrace overlooking the sea completes the scene. Food-wise, you’ve also got the Arsenal restaurant, where they serve up lavish buffet meals - there’s a different theme every night - and an evening à la carte menu.

As for the rooms, they’re more than comfortable, with galley-style kitchenettes, satellite TVs and verandas looking over the gardens or ocean. And there’s an airy feel to them all, nicely accented by neutral décor, pale-wood furniture and sea-blue armchairs.
