The Quinta Perestrello Hotel is really well-placed. It’s just a 20 minute walk from Funchal’s atmospheric old town and promenade, and not much further on is the beach of Praia de Formosa.

The hotel is actually a converted manor house, and with its pale, yellow walls, green window shutters and bloom-filled gardens, it’s Madeiran through and through. The greenery gives way to a rectangular swimming pool, which is flanked by lawns, trees and sunbeds.
